Louis Dufort, electronic music and video

Louis Dufort is one of the four composers taking part to Sixtrum's concert « Lights ! » that will be premiered next January 19 at Claude-Champagne hall in Montreal.

For the occasion, Louis offers us a new work, written specifically for Sixtrum, using electronic percussion. As with his colleagues for this concert, Jean Piché, Sylvain Plhu and Dominic Thibault, his work will be based on the relationship between two media, music and video.

The creation of a new videomusic work - Episode 2

Here we are at the second episode of our "making of" the new videomusic work that Dominic Thibault is composing for Sixtrum. This new piece will be premiered during our January 19 concert at salle Claude-Champagne in Montreal.

During the first episode, Dominc told us how he had reacted when we had asked him to write this piece, and how he had anticipated the project. I must point out at this time that, in this case as with all other composer whose works will be performed during that concert, one of the conditions given to all was that each of the works would have to be easily toured. This means that the equipment, namely computers and other sound and video devices should be "standard"  and easy to find almost anywhere. Incidently, we already know that this program will tour in Europe in 2013.

Sylvain Pohu, videomusic and improvisation

For the second time, Sixtrum will perform Beat by Sylvain Pohu during the January 19 concert. The premiere of the piece was given during the Elektra Festival last April 2010.

Based on the interaction between music and video, Beat also allows msicians to imrprovise, not only sounds, but also images. The composer thus explores another aspect of the medium, as he explains in this video.

Direct from Tromp in Eindhoven, Holland

Eindhoven, city of lights and design, hosts Tromp Percussion. Publicity for this percussion festival can be seen everywhere in the city.

The “Tromp Competition” is an international competition presented by the Tromp Organisation at Muzikegbouw Frits Philips, next to the train station in Eindhoven. Thirty percussionists from different countries participate in the eight-day competition. The first two rounds have just finished and the semi-final takes place tomorrow. Organizers have just announced that the percussion competition will take place every two years.

The creation of a new videomusic work - Episode 1

Next January 19, we will play a concert totally devoted to videomusic works. What is videomusic? Jean Piché, one of the composers involved in that project and professor at University of Montreal's faculty of music, gives us a definition of this art form in this Conversations post.

So in this concert, we will present four new works written by four composers from Quebec: Louis Dufort, Jean Piché, Sylvain Pohu and Dominc Thibault. Each of their pieces will use electronic percussion instruments that will control not only the music, but also the video projected on a large screen.

The youngest of these composers, Dominic Thibault, has accepted to take part in a kind of "making of' or mini-documentary on his work. During the next few weeks, up until the performance of his piece, we will have the opportunity to follow Dominic through the process of the composition and the work with the members of Sixtrum on his new piece.

Cinq Chansons pour percussion - Conversation with David Kent

In the concert series Le Conseil des arts de Montréal en tournée during the 2010-2011 season, Sixtrum will present Aikea - Cinq Chansons pour percussion by Claude Vivier in a new version orchestrated for 6 percussionists.

Originally writen for solo percussion, this beautifull work was subsequently transcribed for percussion ensemble by Montreal percussionist Pierre Béluse, and this is the version that will be performed by Sixtrum.

Having a work originally composed for one player performed by six can bring a few interpretation problems.  One cas eadily understand that a soloist has a greater level of freedom that a group of six.

Videomusic ?

We had been discussing with Jean Piché about a videomusic project involving live percussionists for a few years. Actually since the beginning of Sixtum. The project was then to be presented at Elektra, which had commissioned Jean Piché for a new work. But for different reasons, we were never able to schedule it.

Then this past year, the time came and we participated in the pre-opening concert of Elektra 2010 last May 5 with two videomusic works, K'ANCHAY by Jean Piché and Beat bye Sylvain Pohu.  We enjoyed the experience, so much that we decided to program these very interesting works again in our 2010-2011 season (January 19), and added to new works for the same medium, one from well known composer Louis Dufort, adn the other by a younger composer, Dominic Thibault.

«Pulau Dewata» by Claude Vivier

Claude Vivier's work Pulau Dewata is most certainly one of this composer's most often playted. Because of its conception, allowing many different types of instrumental ensembles to play it, a wide variety of recordings and versions with different orchestrations can be found.

Premiered by McGill Percussion Ensemble's 9 players in the seventies, under the direction of Pierre Béluse, a version often considered as the "official" one, the orchestration performed by Sixtrum was this time done by percussionist Fabrice Marandola. Fabrice has actually written 3 versions of Pulau, one for voice and percussion, a second one for 12 percussionists (which was performed on tour by Sixtrum and 6 french percussionists), and finally, this one, that will be performed during the Conseil des arts de Montréal tour this year, in a Sixtrum concert titled Pléiades.

Conversations

Conversations, is the tile of our blog – this funny word that seems born out of a cross between a temple-lock attack and a water-gong resonance.

Just like any conversation, ours will involve many interlocutors, and lke any conversation, these will at times be serious, profound and inspired, and at other times lighter, almost playful, or even opiniated, fevered and obstinate.. Bawdy ? No, you've got the wrong wensite : Sixtrum is written with only one « X » !

In my previous post, the first of a series on the place of Sixtrum in the career of its performers, I asked the question: "What does Sixtrum represent in your career?" to Fabrice Marandola. For my second post of this series, the same question was asked to Robert Leroux during an interview on December 13th. Here is an overview of that interview:

Whether it is through concerts of the Sixtrum Series, or of the Youth Series, or concerts on tour, Percussion Ensemble Sixtrum shines and makes contemporary music for percussion shine as well. To understand the impact of Sixtrum in the careers of its performers, I propose a series of blogs based on interviews with the musicians of the group.

Last Monday, November 7th, percussion ensemble Sixtrum presented the concert Histoires de gestes at the Society for Arts and Technologies (SAT). The concert was based on pieces which exploited in different ways, the concept of gesture in music.
